China has imposed anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, escalating a year-long trade dispute that started with Ottawa's imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024.

The provisional rate will be set at 75.8 percent.

The Canadian government is disputing the Chinese findings, claiming the country does not dump canola and is deeply disappointed with Beijing's decision.

China is the world's largest importer of canola, and it sources nearly all of its supplies from Canada.

The latest duties are expected to provide an opportunity for Australia.

It has been shut out of the Chinese market since 2020 due mainly to Chinese rules to stop the spread of fungal plant disease.

Separately, China's Ministry of Commerce is also launching an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian pea starch and imposed provisional duties on imports of halogenated butyl rubber.
