Latest studies from the Equal Opportunities Commission revealed that employed individuals struggle to balance work and family care responsibilities. The body has recommended the government consider introducing more types of family care leave.

Between July and August last year, the EOC surveyed 1,000 employed individuals and their family members, revealing that on average, they spent about 26.5 hours per week caring for their families. 16 percent of respondents reported spending over 40 hours weekly on family care.

Some respondents noted that family members often worked overnight shifts or had to answer calls and remain on standby after work -- which posed "severely negative" impacts on them to balance work and family life.

The EOC also conducted an online survey of 400 human resources managers. 90 percent reported that their companies had no guidelines or policies promoting family-friendly employment measures. The EOC recommends the government implement administrative measures and legislative amendments to establish more types of family care leave, while promoting a culture that allows employees to completely disconnect from work outside office hours.
