The Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau says etomidate will be included in the voluntary drug testing at schools under the Healthy School Programme in the 2025/26 school year.

Currently, over half of the schools in Hong Kong participate in the scheme, which allows drug testing with student consent using rapid urine test strips or hair tests. The testing screens for five drugs, including ketamine, ecstasy, methylamphetamine, cannabis and cocaine.

The Narcotics Division says they met with non-governmental organisations responsible for administering the drug tests to work out the details of etomidate testing. The testing methods remain the same. Authorities stress the voluntary nature of the tests. Personal data collected during the process are protected under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.
