China and the United States extended a trade truce for another 90 days on Monday, further delaying the showdown between the two top economic powers.
The previous deadline was set to expire at 12.01 a.m. on Tuesday. Had that happened, the U.S. could have ratcheted up taxes on Chinese imports from an already high 30%, and China could have responded by raising levies on U.S. exports to the country.
Now the two sides will have another three months to work out their trade differences, potentially paving the way for the summit between President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump.
Analysts believe some limited agreements will be reached between the two sides eventually, but some tougher issues will likely linger for years to come.
