Hong Kong has so far a total of five confirmed cases of chikungunya fever and one probable case this year.
Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, said that the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has stepped up mosquito control patrols at construction sites and will deploy new mosquito repellents.
Tse said that in recent years, new mosquito repellents have been introduced. These are placed in a container containing water.
When mosquitoes come into contact with the container, they fly to other locations, carrying the repellent to other water bodies.
Once the repellents reach the second source of water, even if mosquito eggs are already laid there, they will not mature into mosquitoes.
This method has been found to be effective in preventing mosquitoes from breeding in various locations.
This morning, Tse Chin-wan, along with Kwun Tong District Councillors, distributed mosquito repellent sachets and repellent liquid made with Chinese herbal medicine at On Tat Estate, where imported cases of chikungunya fever were reported.
Tse said that the FEHD has stepped up the dissemination of information on the gravidtrap index for Aedes albopictus, and will intensify mosquito control measures if the gravidtrap index reaches 10 percent.
