The 2025 Hospital Authority Young Achievers Award was given to Dr. Gloria Lam and Dr. Luke Chan, for their achievements in knee replacement surgery and thalassemia treatment respectively.

Many elders may need to replace their knees due to degeneration and traditional surgery involves large incisions.

Dr. Lam studied minimal invasive surgery and a direct anterior approach in Japan and Germany. After returning to Hong Kong, she shared this technique with her colleagues. Now, the minimal invasive method can reduce incisions to as little as 3 cm.

During the initial clinical application, Dr. Lam said she made a decision that only 1 percent of doctors would dare to do.

It was to perform a 10-hour knee joint reconstruction surgery on a 90-year-old man.

And his quick recovery left a deep impression on her.

Dr. Chan spent a few years tracking and analysing the data of around 200 patients suffering from thalassemia.

He discovered some little-known complications such as liver disease and diabetes.

Dr. Chan emphasised that clinical research is the best solution to medical problems, and the Hospital Authority's database is crucial to uncover valuable information and experience.

The two doctors expressed their gratitude to other team members. They also said they will continue to follow up the latest research to help improve treatments.
