The 15th National Games will be held in November, with Hong Kong hosting the first mass participation bowling event starting on 22nd of this month.

A perfect strike.

Several retired athletes, selected in April to represent Hong Kong in the bowling event, are conducting their final training sessions at the Kai Tak Sports Park Bowling Centre.

TAM SHUN YEE, Hong Kong Bowler: "Seven years ago I retired from a bowling athlete and then, because of work, I didn't participate in any bowling competition. I feel so excited and I'm glad that we can have a chance to represent Hong Kong again."

WONG TSZ-WAI, Hong Kong Bowler: "I think we're pretty good. We have different bowling balls to tackle different (lane) patterns. We also have some more experienced teammates to guide us through the whole process. We hope to strike more on the lanes."

Including the Hong Kong squad, a total of 27 teams will compete in the mass bowling event finals at Kai Tak Sports Park Bowling Centre from Aug 22 to 24.

Anhui's provincial team arrived in Hong Kong last Friday for early acclimatisation. Chi Mingyu, a member of the Anhui team in the National Games mass bowling event, said that Hong Kong is relatively more humid compared to his hometown and they are adapting.

The Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress arranged a prayer ceremony to ask for a smooth and successful event.

VIVIEN LAU, Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress Chairman: "Now we are meeting all the top bowlers from all of the China from each province, so for me it's exciting. Everything is ready. Because the venue will be closed to the public on the 18th. So from the 18th, no one can enter."

The chairman said both bowling lanes and oiling machines are state-of-the-art.

As bowling makes its debut as a mass participation event, the chairman hopes that the Hong Kong team can capitalise on home advantage to achieve strong results.
