A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck Turkey, killing at least one person and causing dozens of buildings to collapse.
The epicentre was in the town of Sindirgi in Balikesir Province some 200 kilometres south of Istanbul.
Tracey Furniss has more.
People surrounded collapsed buildings in Balikesir Province near the epicentre of Sunday's 6.1 earthquake.
The country's interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, said on national TV that five people, including an elderly woman were rescued from a collapsed building in the town of Sindirgi while rescuers were trying to reach another person trapped in the structure. In the nearby village of Golcuk, the minaret of a village mosque tumbled to the ground.
This Balikesir resident said, "All the children were very scared. We have never felt an earthquake like this in Balikesir before."
The quake sent shocks that were felt in Istanbul some 200 kilometres to the north.
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency said the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks and urged citizens not to enter damaged buildings.
The country's health minister wrote on X that four people were being treated in hospital. None of them were in a life-threatening condition.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement wishing all affected citizens a speedy recovery.
In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of neighbouring Syria.
