London police arrested more than 400 protesters who were defying a law that bans support for the group Palestine Action.

Demonstrators say parliament's outlawing of the group and tight restrictions on supporting it is an infringement of free speech.

Some demonstrators who gathered near parliament were detained under terrorism legislation only to return to the same site later in the day.

Police were steadily working through the crowds to see which protesters were publicly supporting Palestine Action. Some who appeared to want to be arrested did this by using placards. Some detained were applauded as they were led way by officers.

MPs banned Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and vandalised planes in a protest against perceived UK support for Israel.

The group is set to challenge the ban in court.
