A legal battle is looming over Italy's decision to approve the construction of the world's largest suspension bridge linking the Italian mainland and Sicily.

Rome gave its final approval earmarking 13.5 billion euros for a project that has been under discussion for 50 years.

Over 440 properties will have to be expropriated on both Sicily and Calabria to make way for the 3.7-kilometre bridge and connecting roads and railways with compensation being offered.

Some landowners are promising a legal fight.

Environmental groups are filing a complaint with the EU.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is pushing ahead with preliminary works expected to start in the next two months.

The bridge is due for completion in 2032.
