42 riders arrested for riding electric bikes illegally

42 people were arrested on suspicion of illegally riding electric bikes.
42 electric bikes were seized by the police. The arrestees included 39 men and 3 women, aged between 18 and 66.
They were accused of driving unlicensed electric bikes and riding on pavements. According to the police, 11 arrestees allegedly drove electic bikes to deliever takeaway food.
All of the arrestees have been released on bail, pending futher investigations.
The force said electric bicycles can go as fast as over 50 kilometers per hour, almost like a motorcycle.
The police said in case of accidents involving electric bicycles, other road users may not be protected without third-party insurance.
Anyone who drives unlicensed vehicles can be imprisoned for 12 months and fined up to 10,000 dollars.
