Hong Kong has reported five imported cases of Chikungunya fever this year, along with one possible case.
Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan said authorities are stepping up mosquito control efforts both at the border and locally.
He noted that authorities would initiate mosquito control measures if the mosquito infestation index reached 20.
But now, Chan said the threshold for action for the index has been reduced it to 10.
"Simply put, we're taking action early. We urge everyone to see a doctor as soon as possible if they feel unwell to check for the virus. If they do, the first thing to do is arrange for them to receive treatment in a mosquito-free environment. This is crucial to prevent mosquitoes from biting them and then biting others," Chan said.
Chan added authorities will conduct large-scale mosquito control within a 250-meter radius of the patient's Hong Kong residence, hoping to eliminate all mosquitoes.
Chan also encouraged the general public to clear stagnant water.
