Torrential rain has lashed Kyushu, Japan throughout the day. Kirishima City in Kagoshima Prefecture in particular was pummelled by more than a month's worth of rainfall in just half a day.

In tandem with the heavy downpours were flooding and landslides, which have left at least one person missing.

In Aira City in Kagoshima Prefecture, floodwaters surged into residential areas early in the morning.

Streets -- turned into raging rapids.

The heavy downpours also caused land subsidence in parts of the city.

Several cars originally parked along the river embankment, tumbled into the river as the road gave way.

Residents who have lived in the area for two decades say they have never seen anything like this.

Heavy rains have also triggered landslides, sweeping away homes.

Firefighters, now working to extricate residents trapped in the debris.

Heavy rain also inundated the neighbouring city of Kirishima.

Broadcaster NHK reports as of Friday 6 a.m., Fukuyama town within Kirishima City received 495 mm of rainfall over 12 hours.

That's 1.5 times the local average precipitation for all of August, also marking the highest level since local records began.

At 1 a.m., authorities issued the highest level of the special heavy rain warning to Kirishima City for the first time this year.

The storm also disrupted major land and air transportation.

Kyushu JR Railway Kagoshima and Nippo Lines were partially suspended.

As of Friday morning, more than 50 flights had been cancelled at Kagoshima Airport.

Japan's meteorological department expects heavy downpours in Kyushu to persist until Sunday.

Forecasts predict 120 mm of rain in northern Kyushu and some 200 mm of downpours in the south on Saturday.
