Japan's population decline shows no sign of slowing, with the country shrinking by more than 900,000 people in 2024, the biggest annual drop on record.

Since peaking in 2009, the population has declined for 16 consecutive years.

The number of births recorded in 2024 was just over 680,000, the lowest among records going back to 1968.

The number of deaths went up to nearly 1.6 million, the highest on record.

Experts have pointed to Japan's high cost of living, stagnant economy, limited space and demanding work culture as reasons why fewer people are opting to get married or have children.
