U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would put a 100 percent tariff on chips, but offered exemptions for companies like Apple that are building or are committed to building facilities in America.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said his company plans to boost domestic investment by another 100 billion U.S. dollars and announced the launch of its American Manufacturing Program.

Trump said: "This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in the United States of America also are made in America."

"So, 100 percent tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States. But if you've made a commitment to build or if you're in the process of building, as many are, there is no tariff."

Analysts have pointed to the risk of surging costs of electronic products, cars and home appliances.

Taiwan's TSMC, the biggest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, recently announced a significant investment plan in the U.S. including building plants in Arizona. One of its major customers, Nvidia, is likely to be exempted from the new chip tariffs.

The South Korean trade envoy said Samsung and SK Hynix will avoid 100 percent duties.
