A ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II was held today in the western Japanese city.

Exactly 80 years since an atomic bomb was used in war for the first time, thousands bowed their heads in prayer in Hiroshima to mark the anniversary.

Hiroshima, a major Japanese supply base during World War II, was levelled on August 6th 1945

when the United States dropped a uranium bomb nicknamed "Little Boy," killing about 78,000 people instantly.

It was followed by a plutonium bomb on Nagasaki three days later, and Japan's surrender on August 15th.

Today, representatives from a record 120 countries and territories attended the annual commemoration ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park for the milestone year.

After a moment of silence observed at 8:15 a.m., the exact time of the blast, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui called on leaders to heed the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and warned of the consequences of the global trend towards a military buildup.

He said "among the world's political leaders, there is a growing belief that possessing nuclear weapons is unavoidable in order to protect their own countries."

He added this situation not only nullifies the lessons the international community has learned from the tragic history of the past, but also seriously undermines the framework that has been built for peace-building.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ichiba reiterated his government's pledge to work towards a world without nuclear weapon.

However, he indicated his government's support for nuclear weapons possession for deterrence.

In a written message, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of carrying forward the survivors' testimony and message of peace.

Some survivors said they were disappointed by U.S. President Donald Trump's recent remark justifying Washington's attack on Iran in June by comparing it to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Near Hiroshima's iconic Atomic Bomb Dome under high security, more than 200 protesters gathered, holding posters and flags carrying messages such as "No Nukes, Stop War."
