Cathay Pacific Airways on Wednesday said the airline recorded a profit of 3.7 billion Hong Kong dollars in the first six months of this year.
The Hong Kong airline also announced the decision to buy an extra 14 Boeing aircraft.
In a press conference, Cathay Pacific Airways presented its interim results for the year.
In the first half of the year, Cathay reported a profit of 3.7 billion dollars, a similar level to the first six months of 2024.
The total passenger volume of Cathay and its low-cost carrier HK Express combined, increased by 30 percent in the first half of 2025, compared with the same period in 2024.
The passenger revenue of HK Express recorded a loss before net finance charges and taxation of 524 million dollars in the first half of the 2025.
Cathay said the budget airline had faced short-term challenges.
RONALD LAM, CEO, Cathay Pacific: "The impact of earthquake rumour in Japan affecting Hong Kong people's desire to travel to Japan.
But since July and now we are into August, we are seeing that the bookings to Japan has seen pickup. Although it's not back to full normal level yet, but I think we are seeing an improvement trend.
We believe we are out of the worst time."
The local airline also mentioned its expansion plan, including the purchase of an extra 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft, with the first one expected to arrive in 2027.
When asked about the safety concerns of Boeing aircraft after a series of accidents, Cathay's management said a compelling offer from the airplane manufacturer wasn't the sole reason behind the order.
ALEX MCGOWAN, Chief Operations and Service Delivery Officer, Cathay Pacific: "We are very encouraged by the renewed focus that Boeing leadership had on engineering and production quality. We do operate a mixed fleet and that gives us versatility; it gives us flexibility."
Meanwhile, Cathay says the airline will continue with their hiring process.
