Israel's foreign minister has called on Hamas to free hostages after the release of videos showing thin and desperate captives over the weekend.

Gideon Sa'ar accused the group of torturing and starving captives like Evyatar David who was shown by militants last month.

The video was released by David's family on Saturday.

Israel's top diplomat says the world is downplaying the hostages plight and the way they are being treated.

Sa'ar says, in contrast, steps towards recognising a Palestinian state by Canada, the UK and France are a "gift for Hamas."

The foreign minister told a briefing: "The unbalanced and twisted anti-Israeli agenda of a huge part of the international media has once again been exposed. Just as there is no acknowledgement of Israel's humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip - and Israel is doing a lot -the horrible images of the hostages were painfully missing from the frontpages of the New York Times, the Washington Post and most of the global media. It is shameful! We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all the hostages.
