Reports say torrential rains and flooding across northern China have left 70 dead and dozens missing.

At least 44 people were killed in and around Beijing following flooding and landslides.

Officials said 31 of them were elderly residents trapped in a nursing home in Miyun District. They offered apology when announcing the deaths, saying it was a "bitter lesson."

At least 31 others went missing in the capital and neighbouring Hebei province.

Eight people have died in the adverse weather in Hebei's Xinglong county.

According to a report by state media, telecom service was resumed in Liudaohe village as soldiers worked overnight to restore damaged roads.

A further eight people were killed following landslides triggered by the heavy rains in Chengde's Luanping county.

The Hebei Transport Department said 406 road sections have been restored so far, with over a thousand landslides and mudflows cleared.
