Another major power outage has hit an older building in Hong Kong -- this time, at Yan On Building in Kwun Tong, triggered by a suspected short circuit in the premises' meter room after the morning heavy downpours.
When the lights are out, problems pile up.
At Yan On Building, what helps get the household through the night is a single flashlight.
But what's unbearable, the father says, are the heat and the lack of ventilation.
At the centre of the blackout is this meter room at the 50-year-old Kwun Tong premises.
Charred and burned, it has plunged more than a hundred households into darkness with melted wires and blackened walls.
Around 9 a.m. during the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal, rainwater leakage from the ceiling allegedly sparked a short circuit -- and the subsequent fire.
Repair workers are seen rushing to fix the damaged meter room with Fire Services Department officers inspecting the scene.
No one was injured but both lifts were out of service, forcing residents to climb the stairs up and down the 15-storey building.
While Yan On Building houses around 200 households, the outage affected around 10 floors impacting more than 100 units.
This resident said he heard a loud bang and when he rushed out, he saw smoke billowing from the meter box.
With no power or air conditioning, he said he will moving to a nearby community centre to stay the night.
Several ground-floor restaurants suspended operations. They also have to discard their stock in the fridge because of the outage with some making complaints at the building's management office.
"Can you at least give us a timeline?" This as the shop owner laments how they need to arrange staffing and the relocation of inventory of their perishable food.
The Kwun Tong District Office has sent personnel to the site with care teams delivering food and water to residents.
