Top Chinese and U.S. economic officials launched a new round of talks on in Stockholm on Monday, seeking to resolve tariff and other trade issues.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he would like to see China open up its markets.
Trump said, "We have a good relationship with China, but China is tough. I'd love to see China open up their country." Trump's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met at the offices of Sweden's prime minister, and it is expected that the current levels of tariffs will be extended.
Some analysts are speculating that the talks could set the stage for a possible meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump later in the year.
Other issues on the agenda could include more access to the Chinese market for American businesses, Chinese investments in the U.S., as well as Chinese purchases of Russian and Iranian oil.
Meanwhile, just days ahead of the August 1st U.S. tariff deadline, Trump said Washington could put in 15 to 20 percent levies against countries that have yet to sign tariff agreements with the U.S.
This includes South Korea, and its Financial Minister Koo Yun-cheol said he would try to reach a mutually beneficial trade agreement with the U.S.
Koo is set to meet with Bessent in Washington on Thursday. Seoul is scrambling to clinch a deal ahead of the deadline to avert possible punishing tariffs against its key industrial exports to the U.S.
