Lawmaker Lau Kwok-fan said the Sha Tau Kok checkpoint will be demolished and reconstruction work will begin on Friday.
Lau visited the Sha Tau Kok Cooperation Zone and met with the head of the Development Centre of the area. He learned that demolition work on the Sha Tau Kok checkpoint will commence on August 1st with the project expected to take three to four months.
Foundation work is scheduled for the first half of next year.
The new port will be rebuilt using a "cross-river construction" model with approximately 30,000 square metres allocated for port facilities and an additional 10,000 square metres for commercial use.
Lau added that the Hong Kong government is in talks with the Yantian district government of Shenzhen to coordinate the further opening of Sha Tau Kok and Chung Ying Street. They aim to allow guided tour groups into the area on a "group in, group out" basis within this year.
