A gunman opened fire at a Midtown Manhattan building at the heart of New York City on Monday evening.

The suspect killed three civilians and an off-duty NYPD officer before taking his own life.

Officials said one man was left with critical injuries. Four others got minor injuries attempting to flee.

Midtown blocks were overtaken by chaos during the rush hours at the end of the workday.

Video recorded from a nearby hotel showed a line of officers entering an office building at 345 Park Avenue where the deadly rampage took place.

The 44-storey skyscraper houses the headquarters for the investment company Blackstone and the National Football League, among other companies.

People were seen evacuating with their hands above their heads.

According to authorities, the suspect exited a double-parked BMW in front of the building just before 6:30 p.m. on Monday, carrying an AR-15-style rifle.

He entered the lobby and immediately sprayed bullets at a police officer working a corporate security detail, a woman attempting to take cover, and a security guard.

The man went up to the 33rd floor to a real estate management company, hitting a fourth person. He proceeded down a hallway and fatally shot himself in the chest.

Police identified 27-year-old Nevada resident Shane Devon Tamura as the shooter. Initial investigation shows Tamura had travelled across the country before he arrived in New York on Monday.

Officers said he acted alone and there's no ongoing threat.

Mayor Eric Adams mourned the slain police officer, Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, and called him a "true blue hero" for protecting the city.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters officers found medication that belonged to Tamura.

She said: "In total, we have five victims shot, our officer and four other innocent civilians, plus the shooter. According to our law enforcement parners in Las Vegas, Mr. Tamura has a documented mental health history. His motive is still under investigation and we're working to understand why he targeted this particular location."

Tisch said a rifle case, a revolver, magazines and ammunition were found in Tamura's car.

She added there were no indications so far that Tamura had prior connections to the real estate industry or to the city.
