The UK government plans to reinstate its extradition ties with Hong Kong after proposals for legislative changes are discussed.

The changes will allow UK to extradite Hong Kongers on a "case-by-case basis."

The extradition treaty between Hong Kong and the UK was suspended in 2020 by the then-Conservative government following the implementation of the national security law in the SAR.

Last week, UK conservative MP, Alicia Kearns, said on social media that the British government planned to reinstate an extradition treaty with Hong Kong.

Kearns shared a letter from Security Minister Dan Jarvis to Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp on the amendment of the Extradition Act 2003.

In the letter, Jarvis says the designation of Hong Kong is being changed to "enable cooperation under the Extradition Act 2003 and ensure compatibility between the UK domestic and international legal frameworks governing extradition with these states."

The politician says that the amendment allows the UK "to have effective extradition relationships to prevent criminals from evading justice." In response to Kearns, Jarvis said the treaty is still suspended.

On Friday, the Hong Kong government issued the latest round of warrants and bounties on 19 exiled Hong Kongers on suspicion of violating the national security law. Some of them are in the UK.
