French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognise Palestine as a state.
Until now, France said it would only recognise Palestine once the conflict with Israel is over.
But French President Emmanuel Macron believes it is now time to act and become the 148th United Nations member and first major Western power to recognise Palestine as a state.
In a social media post, Macron said France will recognise the state of Palestine given its commitment to a just and lasting peace.
Two weeks ago, Macron said: I believe in the future of the two-state solution as the foundation of a regional security architecture that will allow Israel to live in peace and security with its neighbours.
Macron added: I believe in the need to unite our voices in Paris, London, and everywhere else to recognise a Palestinian state and initiate this political dynamic, which is the only one consistent with a perspective of peace.
Macron's announcement comes amid signs that Israel may be moving away from a two-state solution after its Parliament symbolically approved a vote to annex the West Bank.
We strongly condemn President Macron's decision, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.
Such a move, he said, rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza has become.
Netanyahu said a Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel - not to live in peace beside it.
The Palestinian Authority welcomed Macron's decision, with a letter announcing the move presented to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Slovenia was the last European country to recognise Palestine, in June 2024, one month after Spain, Norway and Ireland.
Meanwhile, Israel's military took journalists to the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing to show what they said is humanitarian aid awaiting collection.
They said 950 truckloads were awaiting collection and distribution.
The United Nations said Israel must enable safe aid delivery, open all crossings and restore movement along key supply routes.
