Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba plans to announce his resignation by the end of August, according to the Mainchi newspaper.

There is opposition within the Liberal Democratic Party against Ishiba's wish to stay in power, after the ruling coalition's defeat in Sunday's upper house election.

Another major newspaper Yomiuri daily reported Ishiba told his associates he would explain how he would take responsibility for the election loss after a solution was reached on trade negotiations with the U.S.

Many Tokyo residents interviewed today say they're not surprised by the latest reports about the possible resignation.

They expect Ishiba's departure after the tariff agreement is completed, and believe it isn't appropriate for the prime minister to stay on.

If Ishiba leaves his post, Sanae Takaichi is seen as a leading candidate to replace him.

A Yomiuri newspaper poll showed Takaichi is the top pick for prime minister in an LDP-led government.

This would make her the country's first female prime minister.
