The government is looking into amending the supplementary labour scheme.

Some employers in the F&B industry said there is a need to import more labour.

With the latest umemployment rate in the F&B industry reaching 6 percent, some labour unions urged the authorities to halt the importation of labour in the catering industry.

They argue some local colleagues lost their jobs after imported workers were hired.

On the other hand, Tommy Cheung, the legislator representing the catering sector and a group of employers said they estimate the labour shortage in the sector amounts to at least tens of thousands.

He said they support the importation of labour not because it is cheaper, but as it helped ease labour shortages.
