The Hong Kong Book Fair concluded on Tuesday, with many last-minute visitors flocking to the event to grab discounted books.

Some 890,000 people visited the annual event this year, about 100,000 fewer than last year, with the fair closed on Sunday because of the typhoon.

Final day of the Hong Kong Book Fair. Crowds started to appear at Convention and Exhibition Centre at around noon.

This English bookstore, which sold fiction and children's literature, offered several forms of discounts, including a 10-dollar sale section. Some readers arrived at the fair hoping to secure their favourite books at bargain prices.

"I wanted to buy some novels," said shopper Verona. "They are already sold out."

(Do you think other places will sell this book as well?)

"Maybe, but here is the cheapest."

Another shopper, Caleb, said: "I brought a trolley today just to get more books at a lower price. I have a price limit to get (books) today. About 600 (dollars). I would like to buy some fiction in English and some fiction in Chinese so as to read more books to enhance my knowledge in marking and examinations."

Some visitors hope the book fair can run an extra day or two longer in the future, allowing more time for locals and tourists to make the most a vast array of titles.

On Sunday, the fair was closed because of the typhoon. As a measure to cover Sunday's loss, the event's opening hours were extended by two hours on Monday.

An exhibitor said the one-day suspension was "unnecessary" but he did not think the incident had affected his business.

"You know, that's something the business wouldn't have wanted it," said Daniel. "We came from the UK, so we've travelled more than 24 hours just to come here. But we think we have bounced back from that. We have made a lot of sales, so I'm really happy with that."

Before the closing time, 5 p.m., the venue was packed as people grasped the last opportunity to select discounted books to take home.
