Online cross-border shopping is getting popular these days. The consumer watchdogs of Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong Province have, for the first time, jointly issued a reminder on the different standards and quality of products from the three territories.
Consumers are advised to read product specifications in detail when making online purchases.
Many Hongkongers have joined the trend of shopping for products on mainland online platforms. But for some of them, the quality of the goods remains a problem.
A few residents shared their experiences of making orders on these shopping platforms.
One man said he has yet to encounter any problems, but he will seek to return the goods if necessary, while another said some purchases he had made were problematic, but chose not to ask for a refund given how cheap the goods were.
This as the consumer watchdogs of Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong Province jointly issued a reminder to consumers for the first time, noting that many mainland products only target the mainland market, adding that there could be an increase in risk if they're transported to Hong Kong and Macao.
The statement also urged consumers to buy and transport expensive and fragile products through companies that offer product inspection service.
The consumer watchdogs reminded the standards and quality of products in the three places differ, adding that consumers should carefully check their specifications before placing an order.
Having recorded 247 complaints regarding purchases of products in Hong Kong and Macao last year, the Guangdong Consumer Council said many of these cases involved home electrical appliances.
Some local electricians said some of the complaints pertain to the difference in plugs used in the three places, which could pose a fire hazard if the electronic products are used incorrectly.
