Twenty-eight countries have issued a joint statement saying "the war in Gaza must end now."

Countries including the United Kingdom and France harshly criticised Israel's restrictions on humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip and called for the release of the 50 remaining hostages taken by Hamas in October 2023.

This as Israeli troops, for the first time Monday, pushed into areas of the central Gazan city of Deir al Balah in what appears to be the latest effort to carve up the Palestinian territory with military corridors.

Tracey Furniss reports.

Lots of large empty pans at this outdoor charity kitchen in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza.

Once a lifeline for thousands of displaced Palestinians, this kitchen used to serve lentils and rice daily but it has now ground to a halt.

Abu Hamza Fawaz is the owner of this kitchen. He says, "Since the beginning of the war, we have not stopped for a single day, but we've been closed for two weeks because there isn't any kind of goods or anything to eat. Even if the prices were high, we would say no problem, we'd buy, but now there's nothing at all." The war has driven Gaza to the brink of famine.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he is appalled by the conditions in Gaza.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations said: "The secretary general is appalled by the accelerating breakdown of humanitarian conditions in Gaza where the last life lines keeping people alive are collapsing. He deplores the growing reports of children and adults suffering from malnutrition. The secretary general strongly condemns the ongoing violence including the shooting, the killing and the injuring of people attempting to get food for their families."

This as the World Health Organization said Israeli military attacked its staff residence and main warehouse in the Gazan city of Deir al-Balah Monday, compromising its operations in Gaza.

The staff residence was attacked three times with airstrikes causing fire and extensive damage and endangering staff and their families.

Meanwhile, government leaders across the world are calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: "Mr. Speaker, today I join a statement of 31 foreign ministers as signatories with a simple, urgent message: The war in Gaza must end now. There is no military solution.
Negotiations will secure the hostages. Further bloodshed serves no purpose. Hamas and Israel must both commit to a ceasefire now, and the next ceasefire must be the last ceasefire."
