A Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into a college and school campus in Dhaka, killing at least 31 people, most of whom were children.
About 88 people were admitted to hospital for burn injuries.
The country declared a day of mourning on Tuesday with flags to fly at half-mast for the deadliest plane crash in the capital city in recent memory.
Rescuers continue their search for bodies in the debris of charred buildings with a crane.
According to a statement from the military, the F-7 BGI aircraft encountered a technical fault soon after taking off for a training exercise Monday afternoon.
The pilot, who was reportedly flying solo, was among the dead.
Authorities say he attempted to divert to a more sparsely inhabited area before the jet hit the campus of Milestone School and College in Dhaka's Uttara neighbourhood.
An official reported that the dead include 29 children.
There is a blood donation camp at a specialised burn hospital where most of the injured are being treated.
Bangladesh's interim leader has vowed an investigation and expressed deep sorrow over the "heartbreaking accident."
