A Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a school in Dhaka and caught fire, shortly after takeoff on Monday afternoon.

The incident has claimed the lives of at least 19 individuals, including the pilot.

A spokesman for the country's military said the plane encountered a mechanical failure.

The Chinese-made F-7 BGI aircraft took off at 1:06 p.m. local time for a routine training mission, but it soon crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College in the northern area of Uttara.

Rescuers worked next to the remains of the plane lodged in the side of the building where a charred, gaping hole could be seen.

According to media reports, most of the 164 injured were students as classes were underway. More than 50 of them were taken to hospital for burns and other wounds.

It is the deadliest airplane crash in the Bangladeshi capital in recent memory. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause.
