The government has gazetted to require all taxis to install a trip recording system and to allow passengers to pay fares electronically.
The gazette states that all taxis must install a trip recording system at the front, rear and inside the vehicle, which can record audio and video.
The location of the taxi will also be recorded through a global satellite navigation system.
The Transport Department will begin to authorise suppliers in the fourth quarter of this year, with the aim of allowing the taxi industry to install the trip recording systems from next year, which will be connected to the Transport Department's central information system.
The authorities believe that this will help deter taxi drivers from improper behavior and improve safety.
As for the requirement that taxi drivers must accept electronic payment of fares, it will take effect on April 1 next year.
