The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force.

The tropical cyclone to the east of the Philippines will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong between tomorrow night and the early hours of Saturday when the Observatory will issue the Standby Signal No. 1.

The Observatory has warned the public of the possibility of the Strong Wind Signal No.3 being issued on Saturday, with the number 8 signal on Sunday.

Hot and sunny weather usually precedes the approach of typhoons. Temperatures over many parts of the city reached 35 degrees Celsius or above.

Under the scorching sun, people working outdoors suffered from the high temperatures, and they used various methods to combat the scorching heat.

This construction worker said he had to drink more than usual to cool down, while this worker said his company treated colleagues with watermelons and herbal tea.

Some beachgoers went to soak up the rays in Repulse Bay.

Temperatures there topped 35 degrees Celsius at around 4 p.m.

The Observatory said the tropical cyclone that is skirting around the east of the Philippines, will move northwest to the northern part of Luzon.

It is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong on Friday night to the early hours of Saturday.

Betty Mak, Scientific Officer of HKO said, " the tropical cyclone is expected to bring heavy squally showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea during the weekend. Locally in Hong Kong, there will be more showers on Saturday and winds will strengthen gradually later. The weather will be windy with squally showers and thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday."

The Observatory said it would assess whether to issue the Strong Wind Signal No.3 on Saturday, and higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals on Sunday.
