Consistent downpours and flooding that pummelled the Northeastern United States have led to two fatalities and a state of emergency in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The governor of New Jersey has urged people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Video footage captured floodwaters gushing into the subway station at 23rd Street Monday night after heavy downpours swept through New York City. Riders had to squat on the seats to stay clear of the water.
The severe weather reportedly brought some subway services to a standstill, while other lines were running with delays.
Officials say the city's antiquated sewer system can only handle around 4.44 centimetres of rainfall per hour, compared with a rate of over 10 centimetres at the storm's peak.
A flood warning was issued for Staten Island, and parts of major thoroughfares saw flooding and downed trees.
In Yonkers, the low-lying sections of the Bronx River Parkway were inundated, prompting the temporary closure of the parkway.
Meanwhile, authorities in Westchester County carried out rescues as drivers got stuck in submerged vehicles.
The New Jersey governor, who took a first-hand look at the damage, said at least two were killed in flash flooding in Plainfield. Phil Murphy said: "Sadly, two losses of life in Plainfield in a vehicle that was swept away. And they, they, sadly, the deceased were extracted."
He further noted in one flooded North Plainfield neighbourhood, a house caught fire and exploded after the family inside had evacuated their home. An investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.
Flash flood warnings were in place in portions of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas.
Southeastern Pennsylvania was hit with 17.9 centimetres of rainfall in less than five hours on Monday. Some residents reported more than 1.5 metres of water in their homes.
