U.S. President Donald Trump says he has agreed to lower tariffs on goods entering the U.S. from Indonesia from 32 percent to 19 percent, in exchange for full access to the Southeast Asian country for American firms.
U.S. President Donald Trump: "So, they are giving us access into Indonesia which we never had. That's probably the biggest part of the deal. And the other part is, they are going to pay 19 percent, and we are going to pay nothing. I think it's a good deal for both parties."
Trump says Jakarta has committed to purchasing 50 Boeing jets, 15 billion U.S. dollars in energy and 4.5 billion U.S. dollars in agricultural products as part of the trade agreement with the U.S.
He also explains that the deal was struck after he spoke with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
The 19 percent tariff is a significant reduction from the original 32 percent on Indonesian goods that was stated in a letter from Trump last week.
The deal is among only a handful reached so far by the Trump administration ahead of an August 1st deadline for negotiations.
