U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should not hit Moscow with attacks.

This as Trump downplayed the possibility of sending Ukraine long-range weapons as Kyiv awaits an injection of U.S. weaponry that it hopes will help it beat back an intensifying Russian offensive.

Trump also said Russian President Vladimir Putin should agree to a ceasefire deal by a 50-day deadline or sanctions will kick in.

As the U.S. president was departing Washington for Pittsburgh Tuesday, he defended his tariff threat on Moscow if a peace deal isn't reached between Russia and Ukraine within 50 days.

Reporter: "Should Zelenskyy target Moscow, sir?"

Donald Trump replied, "No, he shouldn't target Moscow."

Reporter: "Is that why you gave him more weapons, though? Will you be sending long-range weapons to Ukraine, as well?"

Donald Trump said, "No, we're not looking to do that."

Reporter: "Mr. President, why are you giving Mr. Putin 50 additional days to prosecute his war against Ukraine?"

Donald Trump: "I don't think 50 days is very long. And it could be sooner than that. I don't think 50 days is very long. You should have asked that same question to Biden. Why did he get us into this war? You should have asked that question."

Reporter: "Are you on Ukraine's side now?"

Donald Trump: "No, I'm on nobody's side. I'm no. I want to, you know the side I'm on? Humanity's side. I want to stop the killing of thousands of people a week. I want to stop the killing. I want the killing to stop in the Ukraine-Russia war. That's the side I am on."

Trump's comments came after The Financial Times, citing people briefed on discussions, reported on Tuesday that the U.S. president had privately encouraged Ukraine to step up deep strikes on Russia.

The newspaper said that Trump asked Zelenskyy whether he could strike Moscow if the U.S. provided long-range weapons.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with senators on Capitol Hill, telling reporters that Trump will hit Russia's trading partners, countries like India, China and Brazil, if Russia is not serious about peace talks within 50 days.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, "So my encouragement to these three countries, particularly this, if you live now in Beijing or in Delhi, or you are the president of Brazil, you might want to take a look into this because this might hit you very hard. So, please make the phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he has to get serious about peace talks, because otherwise this will slam back on Brazil, on India and on China in a massive way."
