Five patients at Princess Margaret Hospital have been diagnosed with a form of antibiotic-resistant bacteria since last Monday.
The infection cluster involved male patients at the medicine and geriatrics ward. Aged 65 to 90, all patients have been treated in isolation.
One symptomatic carrier is in critical condition. Two of the other four asymptomatic patients are in stable condition, while the remaining two are in serious condition.
The hospital has stepped up infection control measures and is undertaking contact tracing efforts of the patients' close contacts.
The patients have been diagnosed with carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriaceae, or CPE, which is normally found in the gut, can be difficult to treat because of its resistance to many antibiotics.
But treatment is possible with prescriptions of alternative antibiotics and combination therapies.
