To fight sweltering heat in the summer, portable fans are popular among some residents.

The Consumer Council has conducted tests on the performance and safety issues of some models.

The tests found the speed of airflow rate of models can vary by more than 1.5 times.

The Consumer Council tested 18 rechargeable portable fan models under two categories.

For the lighter handheld models, the measured airflow rate ranged from 0.91 to 2.34 cubic metres per minute, with the difference exceeding 1.5 times.

Among heavier models, some with a fan head of 6 centimetres in diameter produced speeds of airflow rate that almost doubled that of other models.

And pricier isn't always better.

ANGEL CHEUNG,Director of Research & Survey, Consumer Council said:"Among these six samples (that received an overall rating of 4.5 stars in the tests), we have the most expensive models and also the cheapest models, so that means the pricing for the products is not necessarily related to the quality and state of the products."

Regarding safety, most models passed overheating and overcharging protection tests.

However, one failed to meet temperature requirements while charging.

According to international safety standards, the maximum temperature rise of the battery surface during charging should not exceed 20 degrees Celsius.

But one model rose by 31.6 degrees Celsius.

JACK POON SIK-CHING,Chairman, Committee on Digital Economy and IT said:"Experts have pointed out that high battery surface temperature is unlikely to cause combustions or explosions. However, it may accelerate battery ageing."

The Council advised consumers to immediately disconnect power if they notice abnormal overheating or a smell coming from the fan. Additionally, all instruction manuals were found to be inadequate.

For example, warnings such as "do not allow children to play with this product" were absent.

The council has urged fan manufacturers to upgrade user manuals to meet standard requirements.

The council added they will send test findings to Customs for follow-up action.
