The results for this year's Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or HKDSE exams, are set to be released tomorrow.

More than 16,000 candidates achieved the standard required for admission to the city's eight publicly funded universities.

This year's top-scoring candidate attained 5** in seven subjects as well as in the mathematics extended part.

This year's HKDSE exams saw a surge in candidates to 55,000, with day-school candidates reaching more than 42,000.

This as the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, or HKEAA, noted candidates must attain the minimum "332A33" grades to apply for Hong Kong's publicly funded universities.

That means examinees must attain level 3 in the English and Chinese languages and level 2 in mathematics.

They must also achieve a level 3 in 2 elective subjects, and get "attained" in Citizenship and Social Development.

More than 16,000 day-school candidates have met such requirements, which is an increase of 0.1 percent from last year, comprising around 38 percent of total day-school candidates.

HKEAA Secretary General Wei Xiangdong praised the performances of this year's candidates, noting the increase of students who attained such scores is of great benefit to the city's universities.

HKEAA Secretary General Wei Xiangdong: "In terms of the number of top scorers, I think this year is the record-breaking year. The highest in the history of DSE examinations."

Meanwhile, this year's top scorer, a male student, attained 5** in seven subjects as well as the mathematics extended part.

Another ten people attained 5** in six subjects and the mathematics extended part.

The HKEAA said there has been an increase of DSE candidates to 55,000, a rise of around 10 percent from last year.

To cope with the increased figure, the authority has enhanced the vetting procedure and arranged additional examination centres and personnel to conduct the exams.
