The U.S. Senate released a report on Sunday revealing there had been a "cascade" of failures that allowed a gunman to shoot at Donald Trump during a campaign rally a year ago to the day.
The report faulted the discipline of the Secret Service and the lack of firings in the wake of the attack.
Meanwhile, the U.S. president marked the day with family and friends watching the FIFA Club World Cup Final.
U.S. President Donald Trump marked the one-year anniversary of a failed assassination attempt on his life with family and close advisors at the FIFA Club World Cup Final in New Jersey.
Crowds cheered as he arrived at the stadium. Trump and first lady, Melania, travelled from their golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey to East Rutherford, 64 kilometres away to watch the final of the U.S.-hosted tournament between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea at the MetLife Stadium.
Earlier, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump spoke to reporters about the attempt on his life a year ago, saying he didn't like to think about it much but believed God was protecting him.
"God was protecting me. Maybe because God wanted to see our country do better or do really well, make America great again, but God was protecting me, Brian, I'll tell you. The more you think about it, the more you see it. But no, I just, I don't like to think about it much. I have a job to do so. I don't like to think about it much. It's a little bit of a dangerous profession being president, but I really don't like to think about it too much. I think you're better off not thinking about it."
A year after coming millimetres from a very different outcome, Trump, according to friends and aides, is still the same Trump. But they see signs that his brush with death did change him in some ways.
He's on higher alert on stage. He's more attentive and grateful, they say. He speaks openly about how he believes God saved him to save the country and serve a second term.
While many may block traumatic events from memory, Trump has instead surrounded himself with memorabilia commemorating one of the darkest episodes in modern political history.
He's decorated the White House and his golf clubs with art pieces depicting the moment after the shooting when he stood up and thrust his fist in the air while chanting "Fight, fight, fight."
