Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held bilateral talks in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon, marking their first in-person session amid rising trade tensions.

The meeting comes on the heels of Rubio's talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on potential new avenues to jumpstart Ukraine peace talks.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre at around 3:30 p.m. to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

It was one of the highest-stakes meetings between top officials of China and the U.S. since Donald Trump returned to the White House.

As Washington renewed tariff offensive on a number of Asian countries, media reported that the top diplomats would likely discuss topics of trade and security. Rubio said his meeting with Wang was "constructive."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio: "It's important that the U.S. and China have productive meetings and regular engagement and communication so we felt very good about it and I thought it was very constructive. Hopefully, we'll be able to build on that to continue to bring stability to our relationship. I think it would benefit the world."

He said the two sides still had "issues" to resolve and pointed out the necessity to keep open the lines of communication.

Rubio also noted the two heads of state are very likely to meet but the specific timeline has yet to be discussed.
