A 63-year-old female has come down with invasive meningococcal infection. She's now in stable condition.

She displayed symptoms including fever and vomiting, starting on Wednesday. She went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital and was admitted for treatment on the same day. She was later confirmed to have been infected with meningococcaemia.

An initial investigation revealed that the patient had no travel history during the incubation period. Her household contacts have remained asymptomatic so far.

Meningococcal infection is one of the statutory notifiable diseases, caused by a bacterium known as meningococcus. It is mainly transmitted by direct contact with respiratory secretions.

Meningococcal meningitis is characterised by high fever, severe headache, stiff neck followed by drowsiness, vomiting, fear of bright light, or rash; it can cause brain damage or even death.

So far, the CHP has recorded seven cases this year.

To prevent infection, members of the public are advised to wash hands properly with liquid soap and water, especially when they are soiled by respiratory secretions.
