Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he would impose retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. if President Donald Trump follows through on a pledge to impose 50 percent duties on exports.

The U.S. has a trade surplus with Brazil. Trump also wants Brazil to halt the criminal trial on former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of trying to overturn his defeat in the 2022 election.

Bolsonaro could be the reason for a possible 50 percent U.S. tariff on Brazilian exports.

Trump is unhappy that the former leader is being prosecuted on charges of trying to overturn his 2022 election loss to Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva.

Arthur Melo, a 19-year-old student in the Bolsonaro mask, said the U.S. is an "imperialist" country and thinks it rules the world.

Lula has vowed retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. if Trump goes ahead with his threat.

This has helped to largely unite Brazilians, with even two moderate Senate members normally critical of Lula backing his stance.

This woman said Trump should focus on Americans who are living on the streets and under bridges and mind his own business.

Some analysts see the tariffs as an attack on countries linked to the BRICS group, which last week held a summit in Brazil hosted by Lula.

Among the discussions was the shift away from the U.S. dollar as the dominant global currency.

Marco Teixeira, a political science professor, said Trump had previously talked about retaliating on BRICS members over currency and Bolsonaro's trial.

Bolsonaro testified before the country's Supreme Court in June over the alleged plot to remain in power after his 2022 election loss. Judges will hear from 26 other defendants in the coming months.

Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump criticised Ottawa for retaliating against previous U.S. tariffs as he announced 35 percent duties from August 1st.

He said the new levy is in part because of the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. from Canada, along with alleged unfair trade practices.

Trump previously imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods but later exempted products under the U.S.-Canada-Mexico trade deal.
