The government is studying the regulation of online ride-hailing and will announce the regulatory framework as soon as next week. It is understood that the government is inclined to roll out licensing requirements for platforms and drivers providing the service.

The licences will likely have a validity period of five years, and after that, the licences can be renewed.

Sources say the government will have their online car-hailing plan scrutinised at the Legislative Council as soon as next week.

E-hailing drivers are required to take a test, which is similar to a taxi driver's licence. Taxi drivers do not need to take another exam to be eligible to offer online car-hailing services. But online car-hailing drivers are not allowed to drive a taxi. As for the number of e-hailing licences, it is understood that the government has restricted the number of licences.
