After the sudden closure of the 36-year-old Super Star Seafood Restaurant chain on Wednesday, the Labour Department has received requests for help from about 50 workers, involving some 7.9 million dollars in unpaid wages and severance.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun said the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund has a balance of about 7.2 billion dollars and is financially stable which can offer support for affected workers.

He added discussions with the restaurant's management are underway.

Amid the recent string of shutdowns of restaurants and bakeries, the city's unemployment reached 3.5 percent between March and May, the highest in two and a half years.
