A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck in waters off Kagoshima, a southwestern prefecture in Japan. No injuries were recorded.
The quake occured near the Tokara island chain at 6:29 a.m. local time. According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, the tremor orginated at a depth of 19 kilometres, but there is no threat of a tsunami.
In the meantime, volcanic eruptions continued on Kirishima mountain range. Ash rose above the crater's rim.
Government experts are closely monitoring the active volcano, saying the possibility of a magma eruption cannot be ruled out.
