The University of Hong Kong said its Bachelor of Science in Surveying programme involving different disciplines has received a new accreditation.

The recognition is in the area of land surveying.

The University of Hong Kong says it has a world's first. Its Bachelor of Science in Surveying programme is the only course in the field that has obtained full recognition in six disciplines.

Apart from land surveying, the university earlier received accreditation in areas including general practice and building surveying.

Speaking to the media on Friday, HKU's Department of Real Estate and Construction said the four-year programme will allow students to gain multi-disciplinary skills.

"One example that I could think of is traditional geo-spacial mapping," said Isabella Chan, Associate Head (Teaching) at the HKU's Department of Real Estate & Construction. "Geo-spacial analysis is considered as the jurisdiction of land surveyors. But these days, because of the advanced of the technology, these techniques are more widely adopted and needed for different disciplines."

The department's chair professor, K. W. Chau said: "We are very optimistic about the future demand for surveyors because of the development of the Northern Metropolis. And also, there will be an increase in the amount of population, mainly driven by imported talent from other places, and also increases in student numbers, so we need a lot of housing and infrastructure."

The department says it has so far received up to eight overseas student enquiries about the programme, with some from the mainland and Southeast Asia expressing interest.
