Gripping Chinese recipes for a global audience.
The U.S. is seeing a booming industry of micro drama productions, which bring together Chinese and American crews and actors to produce series that can hook audiences within seconds.
Filmed in New York, but inspired by Chinese productions these micro drama series are rewriting the world's entertainment playbook, hooking audiences within seconds.
Their melodramatic "CEO fantasies" come with the sure-fire formulas of fast-paced openings, dramatic twists and cliffhangers to keep viewers riveted.
Chinese filmmaker Gao Feng said they're copying China's model in 2021. And all they have to do is to copy it well.
"The world is bound to come together. You never know like how big it's gonna be. Ultimate dream: movie star."
"Verticals and shorts are going to be the new things. It's what everybody likes to do now. It's gonna be so big you can't even believe it yourself."
From script to post-production, an entire series can be completed in under two months.
Filming often takes just one week -- and costs a fraction of Hollywood productions.
Gao's production company now churns out 45 short dramas a year. One of his productions that costs less than 200,000 U.S. dollars has raked in over 35 million U.S. dollars or 270 million Hong Kong dollars.
Since June, such Chinese-style micro dramas have captivated North American audiences -- especially women. Filmmaker Gao Feng hopes amid a more challenging period for Hollywood productions, they could provide a platform for both U.S. and Chinese actors and crews to shine.
