A Japanese comic artist had earlier "predicted" that a major earthquake will strike Japan on July 5th, without any scientific evidence.

But the so-called prediction has sparked concern -- and for some, panic buying.

At this department store in Tokyo, shelves stocking emergency kits and disaster gear are almost emptied.

For thermal blankets, only one item is left.

Also snapped up are popular emergency meals like beef rice and fried rice.

At another store, supplies appear unaffected.

While some Japanese citizens express worries, others say no one can predict the future.

The rumours originated from a Japanese comic that went viral on Chinese social media.

The Hong Kong Observatory, meanwhile, notes it's very hard to accurately and scientifically forecast earthquakes in advance.
